Ah, last week was chocked to the brim with fresh blood – aka new music releases. Schoolboy Q, Dierks Bentley, St. Vincent, Beck, Romeo Santos, and a surprise release from Kid Cudi amongst them – sigh! This week, with new albums dropping on Monday March 3, 2014 (as opposed to the usual Tuesday release), three releases stand out above the rest. The three artists at the helm of those respective releases are Pharrell Williams, Lea Michele, and Rick Ross. Pharrell’s release in particular seems to be highly anticipated.
Other than perhaps a rivaling “Let it Go” from Frozen soundtrack, the hottest song in the country right now is “Happy” from the Despicable 2 soundtrack. Sure “Happy” is a ‘movie’ song, but it also sets up Pharrell Williams’ long awaited solo album, GIRL for success. The infectious single is reprised on the set. Williams’ first solo venture came in 2006, when In My Mind landed at no. 3 on the Billboard charts.
Things seem to be quieter than expected surrounding Glee star Lea Michele’s debut album Louder. Even with so-so buzz and coming in like a “Cannonball”, Louder arrives this week, and could be an interesting, worthwhile listen. Of course, it could be a dud too. LOL. Michele is a great singer, so expect solid vocal performances.
After snagging a Grammy-nomination for 2012 effort God Forgives, I Don’t, Rick Ross keeps things rolling on his sixth studio album, Mastermind. Promo singles “Devil Is A Lie” (featuring Jay-Z) and “War Ready” (featuring Jeezy) lead the charge for Mastermind, which also features guests including Mavado, Big Sean, Kanye West, Lil Wayne, Meek Mill, and The Weeknd.
Other albums to consider:
American Authors, Oh What A Life (Pop/Rock)
Ashanti, BraveHeart (R&B)
Donnie McClurkin, Duets (Gospel)
Regina Carter, Southern Comfort (Jazz)
