Single Review: Selena Gomez, “Come & Get It”

Selena Gomez⎟ “Come & Get It” [Single] Hollywood⎟ US Release Date: April 7, 2013

Selena Gomez has been quietly releasing albums for a couple of years.  Something about her latest single “Come & Get It” screams that she doesn’t want to quietly do anything any more.  Overall, “Come & Get It” is your typical, enjoyable, infectious pop single. There is more than enough gimmickry to go around, evidenced by adding extra syllables to words and some tongue-in-cheek “na na na’s” thrown in for good measure.  It’s well produced, even including a nod to world music.  So in theory, this should be the full package for Hollywood Records right? YES, but there is one rub… this sounds exactly like a copycat of Rihanna.

Part of the problems that Hollywood Records has had is landing a platinum superstar.  Hollywood Records has had their moments and runs (including Breaking BenjaminThe Jonas BrothersJesse McCartney), but they haven’t had the consistent successes that other major labels have.  Playing devil’s advocate (I’m good at that sometimes), it seems this particular single is trying to mold a true ‘breakthrough’ for Selena Gomez.  She’s been successful enough, but Katy Perry or Rihanna she ain’t.  There’s nothing wrong with “Come & Get It” except for the fact that it is a clear rip off of pop trends and artists already tread and established.

Verdict: ✰✰✰
